Serving to keep the community safe

The Plymouth Public Safety Department consists of the fire department , police department and emergency management services for the city – all working to serve and protect the community .
The police and fire departments merged in 2015 to streamline services and resources .
Police Department
The Plymouth Police Department serves residents with 119 employees , including 82 sworn employees and 37 civilian employees .
The department is comprised of administration , patrol , professional standards , services and special operations . Administration includes crime and fire prevention , community engagement and education , public safety office support representatives , and a public safety analyst . Patrol includes one captain , eight patrol sergeants , and 45 officers . Patrol also includes special assignments such as K-9 , SWAT , traffic unit and community service officers . The services division includes investigations and special investigations unit . The special operations division includes school resource officers , training , licensing , and special events .
The department engages the community through various outreach and education programs , including the Public Safety Citizens Academy , Night to Unite and DARE .
Community members are encouraged to learn about the operations of the police and fire departments through the city ’ s Public Safety Citizens Academy . The goal of the free program is to strengthen the partnership between public safety professionals and the community by sharing information and promoting a better understanding of public safety services . The course spans multiple weeks and expands public knowledge of the departments . Each week , an aspect of policing is featured through lectures and hands-on demonstrations and one week is dedicated to fire department operations .

The Plymouth Public Safety Building , which houses the Police Department , is open 8 a . m . to 4:30 p . m . Monday-Friday . The non-emergency number is 763-509-5160 . Many services can be handled online , and appointments can be made for select services that cannot be handled online or by mail .
Fire Department
Plymouth ’ s Fire Department protects the city with an all-hazards response . This includes fire suppression , technical rescue , hazardous materials release and public education programs . The department consists of professional firefighters utilizing state-of-the-art equipment .
The fire department has grown along with the city ’ s population and demand for service . Plymouth ’ s first fire station and fire truck came to the city in 1960 . At that time , 15

volunteer firefighters and several officers were part of the department .
In 2022 , the department has 35 part-time / on-call and 19 career firefighters covering the city from three stations . Five administrative command officers manage personnel , operations , logistics and training . The fire chief also serves as the fire marshal and coordinates two career inspectors and four part-time inspectors . The fire department responds to an average of 5,500 calls annually , including all types of fires , medical emergencies , traffic crashes and other emergencies .
Two fire stations are staffed 24 hours a day and the third station is utilized for part-time / on-call backup response . The department recently made significant investments in two fire stations to better accommodate firefighter staffing and improve Plymouth ’ s emergency preparedness .
Every year , Plymouth firefighters spend thousands of hours training and promoting education throughout the community .
The fire department is active and present at many community events , such as Night to Unite , where firefighters promote education and fire prevention to children and families through neighborhood parties throughout the community . The department also participates in classroom prevention presentations at local elementary schools .
