Certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ( CMS ), the LVAD program is one of only a handful in North Texas and gives patients with advanced heart failure access to LVAD either as a destination therapy or as a bridge to transplant .
As part of the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation ( ECMO ) program on the Fort Worth campus , patients experiencing refractory cardiac arrest have access to extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation ( ECPR ) through the initiation of venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation ( VA-ECMO ). Managed by cardiothoracic surgeons on the hospital ’ s medical staff , providing ECMO requires a specialized team to collaborate . The team includes surgeons on the medical staff , perfusionists , ECMO specialists , specially trained operating room staff , critical care nurses , and respiratory therapists . The ECMO program on the Fort Worth campus obtained the ELSO Award - Gold for Excellence in Life Support .
