AWB’ s first stop on the 2024 Manufacturing Tour was at two important sites at the Port of Kalama. Steelscape has been located at the Port since 1997. Its 260 employees coat steel with molten zinc and paint it for a variety of end users. Each year Steelscape produces more than 600 million pounds of materials for construction, including metal buildings, roofing and siding. Its steel can be found in Costco buildings and on the roof of Apple headquarters.
The second stop was at the TEMCO terminal( upper right), which has 6.5 million bushels of grain storage capacity in the steel towers visible from I-5. As AWB visited, it was unloading its first soybeans of the season coming in from North Dakota and other states by rail, to be loaded onto a boat for export to China. TEMCO also handles wheat from eastern Washington and Idaho( much of which is shipped to customers in Japan), plus other bulk export goods from as far away as Kansas.
Scott Cooley,( left) general manager of Steelscape, has worked 22 years at the company and 32 years in the steel industry overall.
