Human Trafficking Awareness and Prevention
The U. S. Department of Transportation awarded the Airports Authority second place in its annual Combating Human Traffi cking in Transportation Impact Awards 2024. The award aims to incentivize individuals and entities to think creatively in developing innovative solutions to combat human traffi cking in the transportation industry and to share those innovations with the broader community.
To combat human traffi cking, the Airports Authority launched a partnership with the U. S. Department of Homeland Security through the Blue Lightning Initiative, a national program that trains aviation personnel to recognize and report suspected traffi cking activity. Human traffi cking, a global crisis affecting an estimated 27 million people, often involves the coercion and transport of individuals across borders for exploitative purposes. Given the role air travel can play in this crime, the Airports Authority is committed to being part of the solution. The partnership debuted at Reagan National Airport with a training session and panel discussion attended by over 100 employees from the Airports Authority, American Airlines, and other airport stakeholders. Trainings will continue at Dulles International Airport and be offered regularly to ensure ongoing employee awareness. As part of the initiative, all Airports Authority employees will receive a quick-reference BLI card with information and resources for identifying and reporting traffi cking. Both Reagan National and Dulles International airports will also activate a digital awareness campaign and install signage in high-traffi c areas, including restrooms, to help travelers and workers spot and report potential traffi cking. Through this partnership, the Airports Authority reinforces its commitment to public safety and its responsibility to help end this pervasive global crime.
