Uniting for Sustainability: A Worldwide Perspective
During the Committee for Dulles 2024 Sustainable Infrastructure Breakfast on September 5, the Airports Authority participated in a panel discussion featuring technical experts, industry infl uencers, stakeholders and community leaders examining broader efforts toward creating a more sustainable energy infrastructure in Northern Virginia. Together with Dominion Energy, the Airports Authority provided updates on the Dulles Solar Energy Facility and other sustainable infrastructure projects at Dulles International and Reagan National airports.
At the National Renewable Energy Laboratory( NREL) Sustainable Aviation Energy Conference from April 1 through 3 in Dallas, Texas, the Airports Authority took part in the second national workshop on aviation ecosystems co-hosted by Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and NREL. Workshops on sustainable aviation fuel( SAF), energy infrastructure, airport-enabling efforts and advanced aerospace technologies yielded insights into the emerging energy needs of sustainable aviation, the challenges facing organizations and the avenues for research and collaboration needed to propel the industry in the right direction.
The 2024 Airports Council International – North America( ACI-NA) Annual Conference and Exhibition assembled industry stakeholders to continue to problem solve, stay ahead of
emerging trends, witness the latest industry solutions and connect with friends and colleagues in Grand Rapids, Michigan September 7 through 10. The Airports Authority attended a variety of forward-thinking sessions on topics such as ACI-NA’ s performance and risk management metrics, airports electricity and energy management, Airport Carbon Accreditation, integrating advanced air mobility into airport ecosystems, enhancing airport systemic resilience and leveraging tax credits for renewable energy development.
The Airports Authority also participated in the Airports Going Green Conference( AGG) from November 13 through 15 in Chicago, Illinois. Co-hosted by the American Association of Airport Executives( AAAE) and Chicago Department of Aviation, AGG provided a forum for information sharing and partnerships among peer airports, aviation thought leaders, airport business partners, government leaders, and top-level speakers from around the world. The 2024 event kicked off with a pre-conference workshop to discuss the development and implementation of airport electrifi cation policy. Other major themes included preparing airports for hydrogen and electric vertical take-off and landing( eVTOL) fl ight technologies, a systemic view of aviation waste and sustainable fi nancing.
