Located just off-shore in Frenchman Bay , densely forested Preble Island is known for its cobble beaches and roosting eagles . Kayak and camp through the Maine Island Trail or hike the Pigeon Hill Preserve trail for great views of Petit Manan Island and Lighthouse . Hop aboard a wildlife-watching boat tour in Milbridge or Winter Harbor to spot Atlantic Puffins and more .
Milbridge , Harrington , and Addison offer quiet nature trails and scenic vistas complete with colorful lobster boats bobbing in the harbor . Visitors are invited to stop the DownEast Institute on Great Wass Island to learn about how they culture shellfish seed thus restoring and creating economic opportunities for harvesters and aquaculturists throughout coastal Maine and beyond .
With the Kids During Maine Wild Blueberry Weekend in August , families can visit the Wild Blueberry Heritage Center and rake their own berries at nearby wild blueberry farms .
Look for the colorful Kids Quest signs along the Schoodic Byway . Each of the seven outdoor locations will engage children and their families in the region ’ s history , ecology and culture .
