This section of DownEast Acadia , running from the former granite industry town of Hancock east to neighboring fishing villages Jonesport and Beals , gains its character from those historic , hardworking roots .
On the Schoodic Peninsula , Winter Harbor got its name because the harbor does not freeze over in winter , making it an attractive port for fishermen . Gouldsboro consists of many historically separate fishing villages and summer colonies . Just off the peninsula , the coastal community of Steuben was settled in 1760 .
Stop in the fishing village of Milbridge to let the kids run free at Milbridge Commons , featuring a children ’ s garden , musical instruments , and picnic tables at the edge of the harbor . Stroll along the Narraguagus River in historic Cherryfield , birthplace of the wild blueberry industry . Learn about the cultural and ecological significance of wild blueberries at the Wild Blueberry Cultural Museum in Columbia Falls , also home to the Ruggles House Museum .
Just north and inland , Route 193 through Deblois and Beddington is one of the best scenic drives to observe the wild blueberry industry in action .
Back on the coast , Jonesport is a real-life working waterfront community connected by a short bridge to Beals Island . This area has long been home to many of Maine ’ s top boat builders .
Nearly every town here has a historical society where visitors can learn more or , if you have roots in Maine , help document family histories and genealogies .
