FHLP Educator 2024
On September 20 / 21 Alaskan Culinary Educators came from around the state to learn , share , network and grow together at the 2024 Alaska ProStart Educators Professional Development event . Schools were represented from the Interior to the Cook Inlet region and a strong representation from Mat-Su as well !
Teachers spent their first day at the US Foods test kitchen with Chef Bo Marianowits learning about the amazing and intuitive food costing tools offered by US Foods to all their clients ! They were able to play with product and practice plating techniques while thinking outside the box about spice combinations . Thank you , US Foods and Chelsea Wilde , for your generous and forward-thinking approach for your impact on our industry by helping to grow our educators so they in turn can grow their students , our future industry leaders !!
Day Two was held at the University of Alaska , Anchorage in the beautiful Lucy Cuddy Hall where the Alaska ProStart Invitational is held each year . ( This year ’ s date is Saturday , February 8 , 2025 !) Chef Luke Doherty guided the Chef Educators through a day focused on assorted Asian cuisines .
Chef Educators learned about flavor profiles / plating / garnish . They even got to try their hand at blending grains and fermenting both miso paste and soy sauce . ( Have YOU heard of koji ? It ’ s AMAZING !!) They marinated and grilled local king oyster mushrooms and created custom rice dishes . Thank you UAA Hospitality program and Chef Luke Doherty for your space , time and expertise ! A blast was had by all !
Alaska ProStart was excited to see state educators so engaged , inspired and connected . Professional development opportunities allow Culinary Educators to couple with industry and learn what ’ s important to YOU so they can train their students to meet the needs of our state now !
