2023 STANSW Young Scientist Awards Presentation Ceremony
Message from the Young Scientist Coordinator
Welcome all students , families and special guests to our Awards Presentation Ceremony in the Great Hall at UTS . We thank the Faculty of Science and its Dean , Prof . James Wallman for allowing us to use this wonderful venue .
This year we instituted changes to align with our strategic vision of support for STEM investigations in schools , keeping in mind the most effective use of our resources . We have updated our judging rubrics , streamlined our sponsored awards to ensure consistency across our award structure , and introduced a Mathematics award ( sponsored by AARNet ) to replace the Mathematical Investigations category awards . We thank all of our new and long term sponsors for their commitment to STEM education in NSW
We continue to work towards achieving a greater diversity in the students and schools participating in our program . The first of our regional outreach workshops was held in Wagga Wagga in October . The workshop provided information about the program and offered professional development to teachers to help them support student driven investigation in their schools .
Young Scientist award winners also enjoyed continuing success in the inaugural nation-wide i 3 (‘ i cubed ’) awards hosted by the Australian Science Teachers Association ( ASTA ). Kai Turner from Barker College who was the ( joint ) Young Scientist of the Year for 2022 won the Senior Engineers and Inventions Award for his project TARS .
None of these initiatives would be possible without our wonderful committee of dedicated teacher volunteers or the support of the STANSW executive and office staff . Thank you to all of you for your enthusiasm and hard work !
