2023 STANSW Young Scientist Awards Presentation Ceremony
AIP Most Outstanding Physics Award
Awarded to projects that stand out for their real or potential application of physics to address real-world problems
Primary : Freya Callard , Queenwood , Can I Make My Brother Fly Away ?
After much experimentation , Freya found that one helium balloon could lift 28 grams and that she did not have enough balloons to lift her brother . She was a bit disappointed as was her brother even though he was a bit scared of flying !
Primary : Benjamin Oates , Sapphire Coast Anglican College , Take The Pressure Down !!
Benjamin wanted to find out if changing tyre pressure on a regular mountain bike would make it feel more like a dual-suspension bike . To help him with his measurements he used a physics app called Physics Sensor Toolbox Pro . He found that 10 PSI was the best rear tyre pressure for landing a jump .
Primary : Dylan Sun , Redeemer Baptist School , Slip and Slide : Why it is unsafe when shoes are too old
Dylan measured and compared the frictional forces of shoe surfaces under different conditions . He found that when a shoe sole has been worn out there is less kinetic frictional force and this can be very dangerous .
