2023 STANSW Young Scientist Awards Presentation Ceremony
AARNet Use of Technology Award
Secondary : Jasmine Civardi , PLC Sydney , SPS ( Spinach Powered Solar ); An Alternative Sustainable DSSC Solar Panel for an Agrivoltaic Application
Jasmine connected a set of dye-sensitised solar cells into a panel that she designed using AutoCAD and created using a laser cutter . After wiring the cells together , she used Arduino servo motors to control the angle of the prototype with the sun through the day .
Secondary : Rohan Timmaraju , Sydney Grammar School , Embedded Fire Detection - AI Based Fire Detection on Microcontrollers
Rohan used an Arduino Nano board with a camera module and the MKR ENV Shield to collect temperature , humidity and air quality measurements . A neural network was trained to identify images that contain fire and combine this with environmental data to identify the risk .
Secondary : Tim Wilson , Barker College , Soft Robotic Innovation for Advancing Kitchen Independence Among Individuals with Fine Motor Disabilities
Tim used 3D printing to create a customised mould to create a soft silicon gripper that can be used to help hold food during cutting . The gripper was extended using pneumatics , monitored with force and pressure sensors , and controlled by an Arduino Uno .
