When We Say Goodbye
Characters Alex , a 30 something year old man who just lost his mom . He is struggling with the grief of her passing and learning how to navigate life without her . Mom , a 60 something year old woman who passed away . She visits Alex as a ghost-like presence . She ' s a caring woman that loves to spread positively everywhere she goes . Young Alex , Alex when he was 5-10 years old . He is very energetic and curious . Young Mom , Mom before her passing . She is played by the same person throughout all the flashbacks . She still maintains a playful , caring , and loving attitude all throughout . Married Alex , basically the same look as Alex . He is mature and has started his own little family . The age difference between Married Alex and Alex is only a couple of months .
Scene 1 ( A spotlight shines over a cemetery . A small bench is placed next to a tombstone . Alex walks into the setting holding flowers . He walks over to the tombstone , bends down , and gingerly places the flowers . He then goes to sit down on the bench . He begins addressing the tombstone ).
ALEX Hey , mom . It ’ s me . I know you probably can ’ t hear me . But I brought you roses . I know they ' re your favorite . I was actually walking around the grocery store when I saw them . They reminded me of you . And I guess I just haven ’ t been here in a while . And- I just wanted to see you .
( Sarcastically ) Well . I guess I can ’ t really do that anymore , can I ?
( Alex takes a deep breath )
ALEX I started giving Annie piano lessons . It ’ s funny cause .. Well I ’ m telling you , she just started and I can already see her selling out stadiums or becoming the next Beethoven . Who knows ?
( Alex laughs to himself ) I keep telling her that she can do anything she puts her mind to . Like you used to tell me .
