The Atlanta Historical Society was founded in 1926 to preserve and study Atlanta history .
In 1990 , after decades of collecting , researching , and publishing information about Atlanta and the surrounding area , the organization officially became Atlanta History Center .

You can research your family history at the Kenan Research Center , or visit exhibitions to learn about a range of Atlanta history from the Civil War to the 1996 Olympic and Paralympic Games . Visit Veterans Park to honor the lives of those who have made great sacrifice for our freedom or explore a variety of heirloom plants , flowers and animal breeds at Smith Farm . Cyclorama : The Big Picture
On February 22 , 2019 , Atlanta History Center opened Cyclorama : The Big Picture , featuring the fully restored cyclorama painting , The Battle of Atlanta .
The 132-year-old painting is a fullcolor , three-dimensional illusion designed to transport the viewer onto the battlefield during the 1864 Battle of Atlanta , but over time it has evolved into a significant artifact with its own fascinating story .
