Opportunities on the Island of New Guinea
The island of New Guinea holds the thirdlargest tract of intact tropical forest after the Amazon and Congo rainforests . The island ’ s eastern half , Papua New Guinea , is an area of unparalleled biodiversity and endemism that hosts 7 % of the world ’ s species , 30 % of which are endemic . It is home to at least 49 of the 335 global species of marsupials , four of which are critically endangered . In 2020 , Rainforest Trust worked with partner Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program , Indigenous communities , and other stakeholders to safeguard 223,187 acres of rainforest in this extraordinary region of the world .
