CVI PATIENT THOMAS MILLER CREATED CHARITY GOLF EVENT TO HELP OTHERS AFFORD AN LVAD
For people with end-stage heart failure , a left ventricular assist device ( LVAD ) can extend their lives and improve their quality of life , either as a destination therapy or as a bridge to heart transplantation . When Thomas Miller had his LVAD procedure in 2016 , the UAB Cardiovascular Institute ( CVI ) was the only place in Alabama offering it .
He was more than just satisfied with his procedure – he also became an advocate for other patients who needed one . He even created a charity event , the Big T Invitational golf tournament , which has raised thousands of dollars to help others via the UAB LVAD Assistance Fund . The second annual event was held in May 2023 , with 72 golfers competing . Sadly , Miller died in fall 2022 , but he lived about seven years with the LVAD , without ever having a heart transplant . The tournament will continue .
A NEW LEASE ON LIFE A native of Hattiesburg , Miss ., and nicknamed “ Big T ”, Miller was active and sociable . He was an athlete in high school and college . He was a professional collegiate official his entire adult life and was a member of the Inaugural Sun Belt Conference officiating staff in 2001 . Despite his LVAD and all the accessories needed to maintain its function , Miller traveled in an official capacity to college football games to assist . He embraced his LVAD therapy and vigorously returned to the things he loved doing : golfing , officiating college football , working , and spending time with his family and friends .
Inspired by his successful LVAD procedure and continued quality of life , Miller wanted to help other UAB CVI patients realize the same benefits . The first annual Big T Invitational was held in May 2022 at Hattiesburg Country Club . Participants included officials , coaches , administrators , and Thomas ’ personal friends . The tournament ’ s registration fee and sponsorships benefitted the UAB LVAD Assistance Fund , which helps candidates for LVAD overcome financial burdens .
