CARDIO-ONCOLOGY / WOMEN ’ S HEART HEALTH

WOMEN ’ S HEART HEALTH

Heart disease may present differently in women than in men . For example , women with signs and symptoms of heart disease may not have obstructive lesions identified on a standard cardiac catheterization but may have coronary microvascular disease ( CMD ). As the state ’ s flagship cardiovascular center , UAB provides comprehensive , state-of-the-art testing for this disorder and is at the forefront of research .
Risk factors for heart disease and stroke include high blood pressure , high LDL cholesterol , and smoking , along with pregnancy complications and other factors such as poor diet , physical inactivity , and tobacco use . To help curb heart disease and stroke in the population we serve , the UAB Medicine Division of Cardiovascular Disease created the Women ’ s Heart Health Program , which addresses the unique risk factors and symptoms that women face and helps them benefit from cardiac care tailored to their particular needs . Directed by an experienced team of UAB cardiac experts , including preventive cardiologists and interventional cardiologists , the program has full access to UAB Cardiology ’ s extensive diagnostic and therapeutic services and to critical national and international research studies .
