THE MICHAEL J . FOX FOUNDATION 2022 IN REVIEW
Nurturing a New Generation of Research and Care Experts
The Michael J . Fox Foundation has long worked to educate patients and families about the importance of seeking specialty care for Parkinson ’ s disease . Seeing a movement disorder specialist , a neurologist with specialized training in treating PD , is tied to better outcomes in the short and long term . These clinical specialists treat more people with Parkinson ’ s than general neurologists , are more knowledgeable about treatment options and are more likely to connect their patients with the clinical studies that urgently need volunteers . Yet a shortage of movement disorder specialists remains a major barrier to quality care for people with Parkinson ’ s , necessitating long wait times or significant and costly travel to appointments .
MJFF and its partners are committed to increasing the global base of Parkinson ’ s specialists through significant funding to recruit and train new clinicians around the world . These programs also foster an ongoing dedication to Parkinson ’ s research to further our efforts in the clinic and the laboratory .
Edmond J . Safra Fellowship in Movement Disorders The Edmond J . Safra Fellowship in Movement Disorders , a partnership between the Edmond J . Safra Foundation and MJFF , launched in 2014 to build a global network of Parkinson ’ s experts to provide high-quality care , fuel research progress and train future generations . The fellowship has graduated 27 movement disorder physicianscientists around the world and is on track to train 72 new specialists by 2028 . The program also launched the Edmond J . Safra Movement Disorders Research Career Development Award , a competitive funding opportunity for fellowship alumni to further their commitment to advance PD research .
