Outstanding Nurse for Evidence-Based Practice Award
WINNER
LAUREN SCOTT , BSN , RNC-NIC Clinical Nurse IV , NICU , Anschutz Medical Campus
One of the recent goals of the NICU Professional Governance committee was to complete an evidence-based practice project and learn the components of EBP to promote nurse-led change and professional development . Lauren led the committee in reviewing current literature and reaching out to different units within Children ’ s Colorado as well as other NICUs across the nation to determine current practice . They also met with a NICU pharmacist to discuss the risks and benefits of nystatin and fluconazole in the neonatal population . After reviewing this information , Lauren presented findings and recommendations to the multidisciplinary NICU QI and management council and partnered with one of the NNPs to change practice based on their findings . The decision , based on the literature , was made to move from administering nystatin to all NICU patients to only those who are at highest risk for fungal infections . This project was a great example of how nurses can spark practice change and empowered our professional governance team to collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to eliminate unnecessary medication administration .
