Each year , Children ’ s Colorado recognizes the invaluable contributions of nurses and nursing partners with the Nursing Excellence Awards . In 2022 , six team members and one nursing team were selected as incredible examples of the impact of pediatric nurses — both on their colleagues and the patients and families who seek care at Children ’ s Colorado .

Outstanding Nurse for Advancing Professional Nursing Practice Award

Laurel ’ s interest in promoting nursing in the ambulatory care setting led to her appointment as practice co-chair of the American Association of Ambulatory Care Nurses , or AAACN . The AAACN launched its Academic and Practice Partnership Taskforce in response to a compelling need to enhance educational experiences exposing nursing students to ambulatory care settings . This 18-member taskforce began work to develop tangible ambulatory APP guidelines supporting clinical experiences for students in ambulatory care with the goal of addressing the emerging nursing shortage in ambulatory care settings across the nation . They discovered an alarming lack of high-quality literature to help inform academic and practice partnerships , particularly in the ambulatory care setting . With Laurel ’ s leadership , the taskforce was successful in reviewing and synthesizing over 120 articles to identify significant themes relevant to strengthening ambulatory APPs . This included the development and distribution of a survey sent to 224 national subject matter experts , which gathered information related to ambulatory APP experiences .
