AORTIC SURGERY “ FIRST ”
Surgeons on the medical staff at Baylor University Medical Center were the first in North Texas to use a new FDA-device to repair an aortic arch and descending aortic dissection in one procedure . The Thoraflex Hybrid is a single use medical device used in Frozen Elephant Trunk ( FET ) repair combining a Gelweave polyester graft with a nitinol self-expanding stent graft . The FDA-approved device is the only one of its kind available for commercial use . The studies associated with this surgery and the device used indicated that with the hybrid device , there can be one surgical encounter rather than two separate procedures and has led to lowering the risk of major adverse events by 22.6 % in the first year over traditional treatments .

Dedicated care provided by the entire surgical team is critical to the patient ’ s outcomes , including continuous coverage by a specialized care team . Expertise provided by the cardiac surgery team includes :

• Cardiovascular anesthesiologists are fellowshiptrained and board-certified in transesophageal echocardiography ( TEE )
• As a quaternary care center , Baylor University Medical Center has the infrastructure and physician experience to provide quality care to the most complex cases referred to the Dallas campus
The members of the Department of Cardiac Surgery participate in a vast array of operations and specialty centers . The team conducts open cardiac operations as well as minimally invasive approaches , percutaneous valve procedures , thoracic aortic procedures , and operations for heart failure , heart transplant and assist devices . Members of the department are active in the Aortic Center , Center for Valve Disorders , Cardiovascular Second Opinion Program , Heart Rhythm Center , and Hispanic Cardiovascular Institute .

Every surgical patient presents a unique set of challenges , and the cardiac surgical team is committed to providing personalized treatment . The weekly high-risk meetings allowed specialists , from all levels of patient care , to weigh in on a specialized , multidisciplinary treatment plan for each patient . The diverse team of experts , including cardiac surgeons , cardiothoracic anesthesiologists , cardiovascular perfusionists , cardiologists , and ECMO specialists , is specifically equipped for the most complex heart cases .

Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Institute Visiting Professor Program hosts prestigious cardiac surgeons from around the nation to share knowledge and techniques with the members of the Department of Cardiac Surgery . The program provides attendees with current and evidence-based information on a topic related to cardiovascular surgery . Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Institute Visiting Professor Program occurs multiple times throughout the year and is generously supported by the Baylor Scott & White Dallas Foundation .
