CARDIAC SURGERY
Members of the Department of Cardiac Surgery collaborate with a multidisciplinary team across Baylor University Medical Center and Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital to provide expert , innovative cardiovascular care . The program received 3-Stars — the highest possible rating — for isolated coronary artery bypass graft ( CABG ) procedures . As a consistently high-performing program , this recent recognition ranks Baylor Dallas in the top 5 % in the nation by STS for January 1 , 2019 - December 31 , 2021 . In addition to a 3-Star overall rating , the program received 3-Stars in all rated domains , including absence of mortality , absence of morbidity , use of IMA ( internal mammary artery ), and medications . Baylor Dallas was also recognized by U . S . News & World Report in its “ America ’ s Best Hospitals ” list as High Performing in Heart Bypass Surgery for the seventh consecutive year .

CORONARY ARTERY BYPASS SURGERY
Coronary artery bypass surgery ( CABG ) is advised for select groups of patients with narrowing and blockages of the coronary arteries . CABG creates new routes around narrowed and blocked arteries using grafts , allowing sufficient blood flow to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle . Although in most cases open heart surgery is preferred , less invasive techniques may be used , including offpump procedures and keyhole surgery .
CONVERGENT PROCEDURE
The convergent ( hybrid ablation ) procedure includes both epicardial and endocardial ablation and combines the expertise of both a cardiothoracic surgeon and an electrophysiologist to treat more persistent forms of atrial fibrillation . The procedure is usually performed in two stages , two to six weeks apart . Baylor Dallas was one of the first hospitals in Dallas-Fort Worth to offer the convergent procedure . The hospital also offers a Heart Rhythm Center to manage patients with complex arrhythmias .

MITRAL VALVE SURGERY
Cardiac surgeons on the medical staff at Baylor University Medical Center treat both degenerative mitral valve disease as well as functional mitral valve conditions . A multidisciplinary team reviews each patient with severe valvular disease to determine the best treatment option .

908 Total open heart

surgeries performed ( FY22 )
Performed as an open heart surgery or minimally invasively , the cardiac surgery team is equipped to perform both mitral valve replacements and repairs . Patients eligible for a mitral valve replacement may recieve a mechanical or biological tissue valve or may have a valve-in-valve procedure through the Center for Valve Disorders . For some patients , mitral valve repair reduces the need for blood thinners and complications of prosthetic valves . Various studies have indicated early mitral valve repair leads to better outcomes for symptoms , better long-term patient survival , better preservation of heart function , lower risk of complications , and usually eliminates the need for long-term use of anticoagulants .
