The Aortic Center at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of cardiothoracic surgeons and vascular surgeons on the Baylor Dallas hospital ’ s medical staff as well as advanced practice providers and nurses . The team collaborates with one another , as well as patients ’ referring physicians to treat complex conditions with technically demanding minimally invasive and open surgical procedures .
The team uses an integrated approach of diagnosis , extensive education , appropriate treatment , and post-discharge care . Each patient ’ s case is unique , so treatment and recovery are individually tailored to meet his or her specific needs during a multidisciplinary case review each Monday . Some critical conditions such as aortic dissection or ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm requires emergent care . Other cases coordinated through the Aortic Center may be appropriate for elective timing for intervention . Upon referral to the Aortic Center , patients benefit from :
• Comprehensive , on-site imaging services using advanced equipment and experienced technologists including 3D volume-rendered CT and stat echocardiography
• Compassionate and expert care from a team specially trained in the treatment of aortic disease
• Multiple options for high-risk cardiovascular patients
• Access to clinical research trials for qualified candidates
In fiscal year 2022 , the team submitted data for inclusion in the International Registry of Acute Aortic Dissections ( IRAD ). IRAD is a consortium of research centers that are evaluating the current management and outcomes of acute aortic dissection . It was established in 1996 , and currently has 58 large referral centers in 11 countries participating in the registry . The main purpose of IRAD is to assess the etiological factors , modes of presentation , clinical features , treatment , and hospital outcomes of patients with acute aortic dissection around the world . The University of Michigan Health System is the coordinating center .
There were several notable “ firsts ” during fiscal year 2022 for vascular surgery . For aortic procedures , a very specialized procedure occurred with close collaboration of cardiac surgery and vascular surgery . Cardiac surgeon , Charles Roberts , MD , was joined by vascular surgeon Jay Vasquez , MD for a “ first of its kind ” cardiothoracic surgery at Baylor University Medical Center involving a patient with a Type A dissection . The patient was a candidate for a recently approved device and procedure using a new system for conducting one surgery instead of two generally used in Frozen Elephant Trunk ( FET ) repair . It received FDA approval for commercial use just days prior to the case and is indicated for patients with complex aortic arch disease who are at great risk for rupture . This was the first use and first procedure of its type in North Texas .
