Pakistan
With over 22.8 million children not attending school , Pakistan has one of the highest rates of out-of-school children aged 5-16 in the world . The majority are girls . In the remote areas where CAI works , the insufficient number of schools , a lack of teachers , inadequate or inaccessible toilets for girls , and conservative cultural norms contribute to low enrollment and high dropout rates , especially for girls .
Access to Education
CAI supported 34 schools in which 4,444 students ( 2,590 girls ) were enrolled . Support included providing salaries and training to 189 teachers ( 127 women ) along with supplies and equipment .
Emergency Aid
Flood relief became a critical intervention following heavy rains in 2022 that affected one third of the country ’ s population . Central Asia Institute provided emergency humanitarian aid to 4,116 flood-affected families in the form of food packages , household items , and women ’ s dignity kits .
Job Skills Training
CAI led job skills training in sewing , masonry , and hospitality , creating income opportunities for 267 people .
Quality Learning Environment
Children need to have a comfortable and safe environment in which to learn . CAI supports this by providing everything from building improvements to training on hygiene and sanitation . In 2022 , 2,415 children participated in water , sanitation and hygiene trainings .
Early childhood education is an important building block for children that is proven to improve learning outcomes later in life . CAI supported nine Early Childhood Education Centers , serving 440 children aged 5 and under .
