DEEPENING V-DAY ’ S WORK WITH INCARCERATED AND FORMERLY INCARCERATED WOMEN ,
the Beyond Incarceration Project is led by Roslyn “ Roz ” Smith . Roz represented V-Day in a series of advocacy events and meetings on restorative justice , Covid-19 , elder parole , fair bail laws , housing and more with partner groups including LEAP ( where she serves on the Advisory Board ), The Osborne Association ( where she serves on the Advisory Board for the Osborne Center for Justice Across Generations ), RAPP ( Releasing Aging People in Prison ), The Douglass Project , Communities Not Cages , and Women ’ s Community Justice Association , among other groups . Throughout the year , Roz participated in events , panels ( such as at John Jay College about housing for formerly incarcerated women ), conferences ( such as the National FreeHer Conference ) policy dialogues and meetings with political representatives in Albany .
Campaigns were created to support women on the inside at Bedford Hills Prison with the donation of fans and other necessities . Roz visited Rikers Island and Southern Maine Women ’ s Reentry Center to help advocate for better conditions and make linkages with the women .
Her blog is an ongoing series about her experiences as a formerly incarcerated women , including short and long dispatches on prison reform and prison abolition , often highlighting news articles around the experiences of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women , pieces highlighting what she ’ s thinking about , what she ’ s worried about , including interviews with formerly incarcerated women , stories from prison , visions of a world without prison , how violence against women leads to women coming to prison and then the violence they experience there , all the while highlighting important data and facts that shed light on incarceration and our commitment to restorative justice models .
