5NR Members mark Auxiliary ’ s 81st anniversary with Special Radio Operation

Most stations received a “ Thank You for your Service ” comment during the Event from the stations contacted . Several stations had the honor of communicating with Coast Guard veterans . Many contacted stations expressed gratitude to the Auxiliary and the Coast Guard for the work they have done and continue to do . This was a great combination of a communications and Public affairs event to commemorate the USCG Auxiliary anniversary while following COVID-19 restrictions .
Slepian , who joined the Auxiliary in 2005 , was surprised when he spoke with a HAM operator from Connecticut . “ This fellow ’ s Amateur Radio Club actually held their meetings in a facility owned by the local Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla !”

“ The final tally of our nationwide Auxiliary radio operators will include well over two thousand stations contacted throughout the world ,” said Dave King . All two-way contacts and shortwave listener reports will receive confirmation with a commemorative , U . S . Coast Guard Auxiliary " QSL " card . A “ QSL ” card is a written confirmation of either a twoway radio communication between two amateur radio stations ; a one-way reception of a signal from an AM radio , FM radio , television or shortwave broadcasting station ; or the reception of a two-way radio communication by a third party listener . The sending of QSL cards dates back to the 1920s when AM radio broadcasts were still a novelty and stations wanted to know how far away they were being received .
