CCC President ’ s Column

By GARY NEWBORE

Activity Center construction scheduled for May 17

Hello everyone . Last month ' s Villager featured a story on Kim Hosford who is retiring after many years of service to our
NEWBORE community . Unfortunately , we are losing another valuable member of our governance team , Lindy Anderson .
I think Lindy was one of the first people I met when we moved here . If Charbonneau had a welcome wagon , Lindy would be driving it . She loves people and loves socialization . I ' m guessing that Lindy is the most widely known resident in Charbonneau . She exudes fun and good times .
She has been on the board for 12 of the past 15 years and spends a considerable amount of her time helping put on CCC events and helping the various clubs put on their social activities . A director is limited to two three-year terms , and then after a year off , may run for office again . I asked her to write a paragraph for this article and here are her words :
" I enjoy helping people in many ways . I was asked to join the Charbonneau Country Club Board in 2007 . I took some time off when my husband died and then rejoined the board . After being on the board for 12 years it is sad to leave . There have been many changes for the better in Charbonneau and I was honored to be part of these changes . The board can ' t please everyone but we sure can try . Giving my time to help others is what I love to do . And I ' m not done yet ."
One of the good things about term limits is the board gets new people with fresh ideas every year . One of the bad things is losing all the experience that termed out people have . In Lindy ' s case her departure will be a huge loss for the board and for Charbonneau . We all wish Lindy well in the next chapter of her life and who knows , perhaps she will be back on the board in coming years . I hope so ! In any event , knowing Lindy , I am sure we will still be seeing her at the golf shop and at many CCC activities .
Unfortunately , our beloved staff member Kim Hosford is retiring after 21 years of working here in the administration office . She is probably even better known than Lindy through her work helping our residents . Kim has been the person who arranges many of our social activities and so much more . She is a very intelligent person , always upbeat and laughs easily , even at my pathetic humor . Again , here are her words :
" I have met the most wonderful people here in Charbonneau and consider many of them my friends . I guess that is the high point . I remember when I first started working here in 2000 , people
would stop by the office just to introduce themselves to me . I was made to feel so welcome .
My job duties increased , as time went on and I had the pleasure of planning many activities and special events . This was the fun part of my job ! It also required some long days and weekend work . I still laugh when I think of the time a resident called me to say there was an abandoned car in the Village Center parking lot and it didn ' t seem to move . It turned out to be my car .
When I first started there wasn ' t a fitness center . Our fitness center started in 2006 when Charbonneau resident Evelyn Seeley donated money to purchase our first pieces of exercise equipment . We rented space in the Bitar building until we outgrew the space . In March 2015 , we moved into our current space in the retail building . When I started , we only had a yoga class for exercise and bridge and men ' s cards for games . Over the years several exercise classes have been added and are quite popular . Games have been added to the schedule including mah jongg , bunco , pitch , hand and foot , bingo , cornhole and pickleball .
I was here during the building of the Garden Terrace , which is now called the Pavilion after the golf course built a roof over it . Originally , it was just a grassy area with a small barbecue area and wasn ' t used very much . I have been here through several attempts of merging the CCC and CGC and glad to see it happen before I retire .
Charbonneau has been a second home to me and I will miss the everyday interactions with my coworkers
and residents . That being said , I am looking forward to the next adventure in my life ."
Lindy and Kim will definitely be missed as both have been significant contributors to Charbonneau over the years !
After the sad news above , the news that has me excited is finally , after more than two years since the board decided to build a second clubhouse , construction is scheduled to begin on May 17 . It was delayed slightly from late March to May because of virus-related material supply problems . I will love seeing the yellow iron — as us old timers call construction equipment — show up at the newly named Activity Center and begin working .
As a short history , in January 2019 the board voted to purchase an old building on our campus , tear it down , and build a new clubhouse . In July 2019 , the board reaffirmed that decision and formed a task force to begin planning , designing and permitting the new building .
The task force was comprised of 15 to 16 people , including our outside consultants . The task force has been ably co-chaired by Anne Shevlin and Kathy Fuller and began meeting in October of 2019 . For 20 months , Anne and Kathy have put in literally hundreds of hours leading the task force through debating , planning , designing , permitting , and contractor selection steps . They deserve much credit for their dedication to this project and , as a result , residents will soon begin to witness the start of construction of a structure that will serve our community ' s activities . We hope to have it open by years end .
