NWREC welcomes Charbonneau volunteers

Tom Everitt , a Charbonneau resident for the past three years with his wife , Kathleen , began volunteering this past month at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center ( NWREC ) on Miley Road .
Tom is a former school teacher and administrator and is helping with landscape maintenance at NWREC . In past years , the Research Center has employed landscape maintenance contractors . But , this is an expense that the Research Center doesn ’ t have in their budget these days .
According to Mike Bondi , NWREC ’ s director , “ We love having volunteers , but during the pandemic we ’ ve been closed to the public and have had only limited access for the faculty and staff . When Tom came to us last fall to inquire about volunteering , we just couldn ’ t make it happen . There were plenty of projects to support , but university policies didn ’ t allow for volunteers onsite at that time .”
But , with the COVID-19 numbers
Tom Everitt volunteers at NWREC . more stable this spring and more and more people getting vaccinated , some loosening of the restrictions is now allowed .
Tom said , “ I ’ ve been retired about 25 years now , enjoy helping out in the communities where we have lived , and really like being outside . Besides , it ’ s just fun being around a farm with all of the activities here , people and equipment coming and going . It ’ s a busy place !”
Tom ’ s first project is working in a drought-resistant and low-maintenance demonstration garden where he is weeding and trimming . He will be planting new specimens and labeling plants for identification . The garden area is located outside the center ’ s main meeting room and will be seeing a lot of traffic once COVID-19 is past and we can all get back to normal .
NWREC is a 160-acre experimental farm and one of 12 similar facilities managed by Oregon State University across the state . NWREC is OSU ’ s only research farm in the Willamette Valley and serves the education and research needs of farmers throughout the region and the wide variety of crops they grow in this part of the state .
