SpringRidge residents dish on mothering versus grandmothering

It ’ s often said a grandmother is the best of both worlds : “ She ’ s a little bit parent and a little bit best friend .” Lin Loen , a resident at SpringRidge at Charbonneau , has 11 grandchildren and often reflects on transitioning from motherhood to becoming a grandmother .
“ Motherhood is a labor of love ,” said Lin . “ But , grandparenting is enjoying the fruits of that labor . There is so much more joy than challenges .”
Without the day-to-day responsibilities of parenting , she finds she can spend quality time with her grandchildren
, who range in age from 21 to 36 , and five great-grandchildren , ages 3-8 years old .
“ Being a grandmother is very meaningful to me ,” she explained . “ I have more opportunities to share my life experiences with them .”
And though her title has expanded to “ Grandma Lovey ,” Lin felt it important to teach the core values she instilled in her children such as honesty , work ethic , appreciation and empathy to her grandchildren .
SpringRidge neighbor Barbara Anderson , who has five grandchildren and one great-grandchild , concurs . For her , being a grandparent means there are even more people to love . She says her relationship with each is different and feels blessed to be part of their lives .
“ Becoming a grandmother is truly the best thing that can happen to a woman ,” she said . “ It ’ s absolutely wonderful .”
Barbara says while parenting styles might have changed over the decades , she continues to teach the importance

having lived through the Polio pandemic as well as the COVID-19 pandemic .
“ The isolation makes me concentrate on others ,” Molly said . “ Each image in this long drawing is a meditation on some dear person in my life . That brings me joy and sadness . Memories prolong life and intensify our emotions .”
Molly has had numerous solo and group exhibitions , including the Quirini Stampaglia Palace in Venice , Italy , and the United States National and International Exhibition in Rome and Paris . Her work is included in private collections in Italy , Switzerland , Belgium , France , Mexico as well as the United States . Many years ago , her grandmother took her to the WWII USO in Salt Lake City . She watched a soldier drawing another soldier . Impressed , she said , “ I want to do that .” She has been drawing and painting ever since . Molly maintains her studio in the Willamette Valley . Retired from teaching , she was a longtime resident of Lincoln County , Oregon and is a member of The Casbah , a group of Oregon painters , writers , sculptors , musicians and thespians dedicated to furthering the arts .
In Molly ’ s artist statement she says “ As I place line on paper I watch as it begins to dance . Sometimes it is a ballet . Sometimes it is a clog slog and not infrequently a tap dance . It spins , turns , stretches , reaches a vivid height and then by the roll of the dice it collapses . Meandering or rushing , it gyrates and shouts for color , taking on a life ( and a gamble ) of its own from Gesture to Jester .
The relationship of one image to another becomes a metaphor as astonishing as life itself .”
