centre position and are slightly more in focus than their surroundings ; indicating that they are the central focus of the image and drawing attention to their luminous banner , hi-vis jackets and daring campaign tactics . Cobbing ’ s photo connotes protest discourse which feeds into the ideological function of the image . Greenpeace want to people to feel empowered , as if they can stand up for what they believe in and make a difference . O ’ Neill et al ( 2013 , pp . 418-420 ) found that climate protest imagery encouraged feelings of self-efficacy , with participants seeing protest as a clear way for “ normal people ” to “ get involved and get their ideas across to the political leaders ”. Furthermore , O ’ Neill and Smith ( 2013 , p . 81 ) identified that positive emotions were associated with photographs of climate protest .
portrait orientation allows the photographer to fit in the river , bridge and trees into frame ( Barker , n . d .). It also emphasizes the vertical lines of the trees .
Restore nature to boost carbon storage Greenpeace also demand that Government ‘ restore nature to boost carbon storage ’ ( Greenpeace UK , 2019 , p . 21 ). They explain that restoring nature that this means “ taking pressure off the land through a reduction in extractive activities , including demands for fuel , feed and mining .” ( Greenpeace UK , 2019 , p . 21 ). The report provides a list of different actions that can be undergone to achieve this demand . These include planting at least 700 million trees by 2030 and introducing a “ zero global deforestation footprint target for UK consumption ” ( Greenpeace UK , 2019 , p . 21 ).
This image of an area of woodland is also included . In the image , we can see all the trees and other foliage that make up the woodland , as well as a bridge over a river that reflects the greenery . When zoomed in , we can also see that there is a small child with what looks to be his mother , walking through the woodland . The photographer uses a long shot in a portrait format , with the whole scene in focus . The image signifies the beauty of nature and the potential of nature-based solutions in reducing CO2 and tackling climate change . The fact that the young boy and his mother occupy such a small part of the image could also allude to Greenpeace ’ s philosophy regarding the relationship between humans and nature . In an article for Greenpeace , Rex Weyler ( 2019 ) writes about James Lovelock ’ s seminal work Gaia , exploring the hypothesis and how “ the success of humans has again unbalanced the Earth ’ s atmosphere and oceans ”. The subjects being so small in this photograph could connote that man ’ s impact on nature should be minimal . This would align with Greenpeace ’ s “ zero global deforestation footprint ” target ( Greenpeace UK , 2019 , p . 21 ).
