KRISHAN PATEL

Temporary Utilisation of Vacant Sites in the Ropewalks area of Liverpool for Community Uses

Site Model 1:500 - Wood and PLA
The street ' s importance in the thesis project required a coherent understanding of the relationship between spaces and buildings along it , through functions , materiality , or colour . The clear incision of temporary structures within vacant spaces along Henry Street in this model depicts the new forms and the urban derelict footprints that they occupy . The use of colour and materiality clearly signifies the contrast between new and existing within the site and how the interventions create intrigue in architectural forms , while being considerate to the existing building typology .
The model also helped to understand sunlight paths throughout the site and how its natural lighting strategies could be inplemented in narrow sites .
Triodetic System Structural Model 1:15 - Paper and Greyboard
The part-triodetic structural model exhibits how the construction method will take place and how its concept , along with the materiality can create endless forms and angles which can be defined by its manufacturer and designer .
In the model the steel connectors have been modelled using layered greyboard with slits for the tubes to be inserted and secured into . The varying angles of the tubes are determined by the crimping angles which can be altered without affecting the structural integrity of the material .
Even though the exact materials were not used , this model helped understand the load capacities of the structure through testing .
Winter Garden Structural Model 1:100 - Wood and Greyboard
The Winter Garden intervention utilises the existing masonry structure ( orange in model ), while intricately implementing a new fibre reinforced recycled plastic structural strategy for a new form within which attaches to the existing masonry . This parasitic incision creates an urban space which exhibits the intervention ' s temporariness while acting as an education tool in educating the public on the uses of recycled plastics within construction .
The exploded model depicts this parasitic intervention by emphasising how the new structure will be inserted into the existing form while retaining key features of the facade and roof spaces .
