Relationship to the source text and setting Andrzej Sapkowski ' s novel series provides the basis for all Witcher media . It establishes the world ' s bible and canon , setting rules and providing a consistent tone while introducing readers to important characters , locations and events . CD Projekt Red ' s role-playing Witcher games expand upon the story Sapkowski ' s novel present . The player controls series protagonist Geralt of Rivia as he traverses a narrative that ensues after the ambiguous end of the final novel . The games are not considered canon by Sapkowski , due to their ' fundamental difference in nature ' ( Milakovic , 2022 ). However , they rely heavily on the novel series ' lore and exhibit canonical continuity , as the final novel leaves Geralt ' s fate uncertain . The games take advantage of the ambiguous ending by presenting a narrative that directly follows it , revealing that the protagonist managed to survive the conclusion of The Lady of the Lake . This continuity has meant that fans consider CD Projekt Red ' s games as a canonical sequel to the novels , and will be excited to see the narratives of both series contained within a single piece of media when playing A New Order ( Milakovic , 2022 ). Additionally , Sapkowski praised CD Projekt Red for their faithfulness when expanding on his work , stating that ' a piece of media that diverges from its source material is much more interesting than simply interpreting the story from the series into a different form of media ' ( Milakovic , 2022 ). A New Order expresses this key world element through the difficult recruiting process , which is risky and time- consuming .
