Woodford
Bennington and towns adjacent all have mountains , but only Woodford , due east of Bennington along the Molly Stark Scenic Byway ( Route 9 ), can claim to be in the mountains . Much of the town lies in the Green Mountain National Forest . Idyllic Woodford State Park , at 2400 ft ., is the highest state park in Vermont , with camping , cabins , canoe rentals – and quiet . The Long Trail and the Appalachian Trail ( one and the same in this part of Vermont ) pass through town , and in winter Woodford is a major access point for VAST ( the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers , i . e . snowmobilers ).
Woodford ’ s Prospect Mountain is an outstanding cross-country skiing destination , with more than 30 km of well-maintained trails . There are tracks for snowshoers , too , and in 2018 Prospect hosted the US National Snowshoe Championships .
