Sunderland
North of Arlington and south of Manchester is the town of Sunderland , less well known than its more prominent neighbors . The 956 people who call Sunderland home don ’ t mind ; they know what they ’ ve got , and they welcome visitors to share it at several fine inns , including the 50-acre Hill Farm Inn situated on the banks of the Battenkill , with excellent fishing , hiking , and cross-country skiing right out the back door . Ethan Allen and his enterprising younger brother Ira ( founder of the University of Vermont ) built one of the first homes in Sunderland , now the Ira Allen House ( a country inn ) right on Route 7A .
Sunderland and Arlington are popular launching sites for river adventures . Vermont River Runners rents canoes and offers pickup service . You can also enjoy the river from Sunderland Hill Road , which runs parallel to Route 7A through some beautiful country .
