Suicide Scenario in Nepal

Suicide is the act of intentionally ending one ’ s own life most often as a result of depression or any other mental disorder . Death due to suicide is a major problem prevailing all around the world . There is no single cause of suicide . Suicidal thoughts are common when a person cannot cope up with various situations in their life . However , various historical factors , psychological factors , health factors , and social factors can enhance suicidal ideation . Poisoning and hanging are the most common methods of committing suicide . Apart from these , drowning , jumping , drugs , firearm , stabbing , use of an explosive agent , burning are some other methods of committing suicide . Over 800,000 people die every year due to suicide which means 1 person dies every 40 seconds ( WHO , 2019 ). In the year 2017 , 1.4 % of total death globally was from suicide , ranking it in 15th position for the cause of death all over the world ( Global Burden of Diseases , WHO , 2017 ).

Nepal lacks routine national level reliable data for suicides and attempted suicides . The data that are available are based on cases registered by Nepal Police . This issue is further complicated by limited engagement of families in reporting suicide attempts due to fear of legal entanglement , financial burden , and especially due to misconception about suicide as a crime . A 2014 scoping review of suicide in South Asia estimated 9.6 per 100,000 suicide rates in Nepal . The report titled “ Preventing Suicide : A Global Imperative ”, showed that Nepal has the second-highest per-capita suicide in South Asia after Sri Lanka . In Nepal , on average 14 people commit suicide every day . Data registered by Nepal police shows an increasing trend in suicide case registration from fiscal year 2055 / 56 to fiscal year 2075 / 2076 . 4504 cases were registered in fiscal year 2070 / 71 and the maximum suicide case registration rate was 13.34 . Survey after the earthquake in the year 2072 B . S . reported a 41 % increase in people choosing to take their own lives . A three months ’ comparison before and after the earthquakes of April and May 2015 showed a rise in suicidal attempts according to Nepal Police . 965 had committed suicide three months before April / May , while the number rose to 1363 within three months . Higher reporting of suicidal symptoms was observed among older age group i . e . 60 and high than compared to a younger age . Loss of loved ones and property are the major reasons that cause severe mental illness among most of the people . Foreign Employment Promotion Board from fiscal year 2008 / 09 to 2014 / 15 showed that there were a total of 451 cases of suicide . Among of which 68 % of them occurred in Middle Eastern countries and Malaysia .

Among 5754 suicide cases registered in fiscal year 2075 / 76 , 40 % of people were of age group 19-35 years , 30 % of age group 36-50 years , 16 % of age group 51-69 years , 9 % of age group < 18 years and 5 % of age group > 70 . These data also suggest that Suicide among youths was maximum in this fiscal year . According to data revealed by Nepal police on March 14 , 2019 , out of a total of 7144 cases , 4500 suicide cases were reported among the youth of the age group 16-25 and 26-35 years , and around 2500 suicide cases were reported among other age groups . Suicide rates are also high among vulnerable groups who experience discrimination , such as refugees and migrants ; indigenous people , lesbian , gay , bisexual ,
