16 THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER September 2020
The Niners
By KATHRYN HARTLAUB
We are combining
part of the
August newsletter
with September’s
as we had a
mishap with conveying
the information
to the
HARTLAUB
newsletter.
Please accept our apology for some
delays, but this month combines it
all, starting with the new member
orientation in June.
On Monday, June 8, 12 new members
attended the New Member Orientation
in the dining room at Charbonneau.
Hosting the event were the committee
chairs Mary Jane Hunt and Julie
Beaton, along with committee
members Ellen Newbore, Linda
Shields, Robyn Andrus and Karen Siegel.
Additional committee chairs attending
were Debbie Stonebraker
(scoring), Susan Cary (rules), Karen
Siegel (handicap), Cathy Loffink
(scrambles), Mary Jane Hunt (etiquette)
and Karen Giardina (big and
little sisters).
There was an hour-long “Round
Robin” session with six tables, each
with two new members while maintaining
the COVID-19 regulations of a
6-foot spacing. A committee chair stood
at the table sharing her topic in a
10-minute interactive presentation
with time for questions. Members then
rotated until all six topics were covered.
The rules chair handed out official
rule books, our yellow bag cards, and

the white cards. Handbooks were distributed
at the end of the session.
Mary Fieweger, president, was introduced
and she conducted a “door
prize” drawing for coffee mugs and
coffee, which she obtained through donations.
Robyn Andrus took individual
photos of each new member following
the session.
And our new member list keeps
growing!
As empty-nesters, Julie Weiss and
her husband live in Wilsonville. While
she is an event planner specializing in
weddings, she spends her free time
walking her three dogs, working at
CrossFit or golfing. Julie has some
special connections to the Charbonneau
community. As a marathon runner
in the ‘90s, she often ran a route
through Charbonneau. Her parents
Judy Cain and Cathy Loffink wear masks as
they sign in for the “Playing the Pandemic with
Pleasure” Scramble.
were also Charbonneau residents and
loved golf, and she shared that when
she’s out on the course, she feels very
close to them. In fact, her mother was
a Niner, and Julie golfs with her mother’s
clubs today as she carries out her
mother’s legacy. As a proud Arizona
State alumna, look for Julie carting
those clubs in an Arizona bag! She enjoys
the consistency that golf provides
and enjoys her days out on the course.
We also welcome Pam Wheeler.
Pam grew up in Portland and now resides
in Tualatin where she has been
a resident for 13 years. Pam continues
to work full time, yet she dedicates
one day a week for Niner golf. Her sister-in-law
and Niner, Pam Jacob, has
encouraged her to join. Pam grew up
in a family of golfers and she enjoys
playing with her husband. She volunteers
at her church and enjoys spending
free time with her family.
