20 THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER June 2020 Civic Affairs By WAYNE RICHARDS This is why I’m pretty happy Growing up, I went to nine different schools all across the country and finally graduated from Lake Oswego High School in 1966. The Army RICHARDS had me living in Washington, Virginia, Georgia and Alabama. Spent a tour in Vietnam flying airplanes for the Army and then about 10 years all over Texas. I can honestly say I’ve never lived anywhere like Charbonneau. Before I retired I worked in Hillsboro and did the commute back and forth everyday but when I got to French Prairie Road and turned off Miley Road it was like a weight lifted off my shoulders and I could breath. Our community feels like a resort with magnificent tree-lined streets, people that care about their property, and extraordinary amenities. I’m a terrible golfer but I go out often just to be on three courses that are so well cared for. I’ve found the people here interesting, good-natured and willing to volunteer when needed. The flowers are blooming all over the place, the weather is perfect and our CCC and tennis club provide excellent opportunities for a huge variety of interests. We have our own newspaper and a CCC staff Jim, Kim and Karen that keep us informed of the community’s activities. Oh! And swimming pools. You may not always agree with them, but the quality, care and time of our CCC Board of volunteers is first class and they’re smart and they listen. Sure, we have things to work on. The airport really needs to heed longstanding Oregon State Land Use Rules and at least get a full on Environment Impact Statement for noise, fumes, and water and EFU protection from the State of Oregon before they proceed with an extension. But overall we are so lucky to live here. Thanks to all of you that have kept Charbonneau beautiful, sane, and the envy of most all communities in Oregon. Charbonneau Book Club By DOROTHY HOCHHALTER Fingers crossed for in-person discussions when allowed I am looking forward to the day our Book Club members can return to the clubhouse and sit around the table and enjoy a HOCHHALTER conversation about the books we have read. Our first one is about a shy Swedish girl who loves books and has been corresponding with a pen pal in Iowa. She makes plans to visit her friend but when she arrives in the dying little town of Broken Wheel. It is amid the funeral of Amy and the small community decides it has to entertain “the tourist.” This is a delightful little story of the power of reading and how it revitilized this fading town. Katrina Bivald, a Swedish author writes an interesting book titled “The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend.” Our regular day for discussion would be June 9. Willy Vlautin, an Oregon resident, writes about the down-trodden and their constant struggle to get ahead in modern society. His book, “Don’t Skip Out on Me” tells the story of Horace Hopper, a young ranch hand who leaves a secure home in rural Nevada to follow his dream of being a professional boxer. Vlautin is a master at describing his characters with compassion and realism that will break your heart. We have read other books by him and he has become one of my favorite authors. Our plan is to review this novel June 23. We meet at the Charbonneau Country Club on the second and fourth Tuesday from 1-2:30 p.m. Hopefully we can resume our regular schedule soon.
