Nelsen sees tremendous potential to build an elite workforce not just among graduates , but also among those whose college careers ended without a degree . Although Sac State ’ s graduation rate has more than doubled under his tenure , there are about 63,000 people in Sacramento who are within five courses of finishing their bachelor ’ s degree , according to Nelsen . The university ’ s continuing education department has launched ProjectAttain !, an effort to help these students get their degrees and improve their employability while also providing an overall boost for the region .
“ When we ’ re out there with the Greater Sacramento Economic Council talking to companies , one of the very first questions they ask is , ‘ What is your educational attainment ?’” says Nelsen , explaining that potential employers want to know what level of education they will find in the workforce . “ If we can help these people get their degree , it lifts that attainment level dramatically .”
Recent graduates are often at a disadvantage for an open position when they have to compete with others who have professional experience , even if it has come without a degree . David Grussenmeyer , university engagement manager at Inductive Automation in Folsom , launched a partnership with community colleges and universities to give students the experience they need and also potentially fill positions at his company . Inductive Automation ’ s software , Ignition , automates processes across a range of industries .
“ The university engagement program is designed to give students the opportunity to work with Ignition while they are still in school ,” says Grussenmeyer . “ With over 2,000 system integrators worldwide using Ignition , there is a large

CNU Medical Center will provide a full range of vital medical specialties from cancer treatment and emergency surgery to critical care . Additionally , it will train future generations of physicians from CNU College of Medicine , which ranks among the top 25 U . S . medical schools based on the number of students who pass , and how well they perform , on the rigorous United States Medical Licensing Examination .
CNUMC will reduce response times for patients who experience heart attacks , strokes and other critical illnesses and must currently travel to Sacramento for emergency care , as well as provide significant economic benefits for the City of Elk Grove and Sacramento region .
According to Varshney and Associates , a management consulting firm based in El Dorado Hills , CNUMC is expected to have the following economic impact in the first 10 years :
• $ 4.04 billion in total economic output
• 24,000 new jobs ( direct and indirect regionwide )
• $ 113 million in new business tax revenue for the City of Elk Grove
• $ 5,600 in average annual economic benefit per household
The Elk Grove City Council is scheduled to vote on the project in early 2021 .
