F 8 PM FRIDAYS OCT 2 OCT 23 NOV 13 MAR 19 APR 23 JUN 4 Lukáš Vondráček OCT 2 OCT 23 NOV 13 ALL RACHMANINOFF SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE STRAVINSKY RITE OF SPRING The powerful Czech pianist Lukáš Vondráček joins Marin Alsop for a lush program of piano, vocal and orchestral music by Sergei Rachmaninoff, whose Second Piano Concerto boasts one of his biggest romantic tunes. The program closes with his choral symphony, The Bells, based on the poem by Edgar Allan Poe. Conductor Matthias Pintscher leads a program celebrating the varied voices of France. In "Ibéria," from his multinational tone poem Images, Debussy carries us to an Andalusian village in three colorful sound pictures. The lands of Asia are depicted in Ravel’s song cycle Shéhérazade, featuring the Metropolitan Opera’s young mezzo star Kate Lindsey. And we visit a world purely of the imagination: Berlioz’s spine-tingling Symphonie fantastique, in which a disappointed lover finds himself entrapped in a terrifying Witches’ Sabbath. Marin Alsop has created a fascinating program that mixes Russia’s Igor Stravinsky with Germany’s Kurt Weill. Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring provoked a riot at its premiere in Paris in 1913 and ranks as one of the 20th century’s most exciting scores. Fleeing the Nazi takeover of their country, Weill joined with playwright Bertolt Brecht to create another Paris shocker in 1933 — their satirical “ballet with songs,” The Seven Deadly Sins, which will feature a dancer and quartet of male voices.
