Monsoon Survival Guide How to weatherproof your home
Lightning, dust and rain – oh my! It’ s monsoon season; the time of year when a clear hot day can quickly turn violent as monsoon storms sweep across the Valley bringing hot air, rain and blowing dust that send debris flying through the air.
“ From heavy rain to strong winds that can bend, break and even destroy power lines and utility poles, monsoon storms deliver some of the most hazardous weather Arizonans experience all year,” says Kathleen Mascareñas, media relations specialist at Salt River Project( SRP).
According to SRP, monsoon storms have the ability to knock out power for a matter of minutes to even as long as a couple of days, although the latter is very rare.
“ It’ s wise to prepare for monsoon season before a storm actually strikes,” Mascareñas says.
So, how does a person prepare before a storm?
“ Before the intense storm season starts there are preventative measures to prepare for a power outage,” Mascareñas says.“ One tip is to install surge protectors to safeguard expensive electrical items like computers and television sets.”
Other suggestions:
X Regularly change air filters to ensure the air conditioner is running up to par.
X Backup any important files that may be stored on computers.
X Clean outside drains to eliminate any excess debris
X Trim trees, especially around electrical lines, to avoid potential hazards.
X Make sure all windows and door frames are properly sealed.
X Place flashlights in handy locations, such as near telephones.
And because monsoon storms are so unpredictable, SRP also recommends households have ample supplies handy in case of an extensive power outage.
“ Make sure to have a first-aid kit readily available, as well as, any medications for young children and the elderly.” Mascareñas says.“ Make sure to have non-perishable food
