2019 Kiawah Conservancy Annual Report 2019-R | Page 8

The Kiawah Conservancy Legacy Society By Peggy Barnes, Trustee and Advancement Committee Chair During these days and weeks of social distancing, never has it been more clear than right now why Kiawah Island is such a special place. From solitary mornings on the beach, to biking on the leisure trails, to time spent watching the myriad of birds (and the occasional pesky squirrel), Kiawah feeds the heart, calms the mind and nourishes the soul. Those of us who are fortunate to spend time here, especially in Spring of 2020, know the value of the natural beauty and peace of Kiawah. For over twenty years, the Kiawah Conservancy has focused on preserving and protecting undeveloped land and the surrounding marshes, providing environmental education for property owners and visitors and conducting research into our unique wildlife and habitats. “Protect what you love” is not only an apt phrase, but a value Conservancy supporters hold dear. In 2019, at the start of a 2030 Strategic Planning process, it became clear that the Conservancy must provide a firm foundation for the future, resulting in the establishment of an Endowment. With today’s roller coaster of economic news, securing resources to grow the Endowment has become even more essential for the organization. Philanthropic research shows that one of the best ways to build an Endowment for a nonprofit is through Planned Giving, often known as Legacy Giving. Planned gifts provide the donor with an opportunity to leave a legacy for the future success of a well-loved organization. In recognition of those donors who have made a commitment to our Endowment, the Board has established the “Legacy Society.” Legacy Society individual and family donors can create gift commitments now, as a living legacy, or for the future, as a deferred legacy gift. All donors who contribute to the Endowment will be recognized, if desired, as members of the Conservancy’s Legacy Society. 6 Photo by Emily Horn
