"Every time I listen to Real Food Reads, I come
away with a new insight into what the term
‘food justice’ means. Covering a diversity of
topics such as drought and the histories of
sharecroppers, Real Food Reads explores the
importance and the complexity of food. I’m
always recommending it to my friends.”

around the world and our podcasts have been listened
to over 22,000 times as of November 2019.
At the end of 2018, Anna Lappé passed the mic to Tanya Kerssen and Tiffani Patton, who stepped in as the new
hosts of Real Food Reads. This season featured books with a focus on policy and corporate power, helping us
to understand complex structural issues—like NAFTA, the Farm Bill, and Black land loss—and their impact on
the lives of everyday people. Through our 2019 book selections, we also learned from the community-based
movements that are decolonizing diets, sowing seeds of resilience, and reclaiming the land for marginalized
food producers.
In 2019, we created a Book Club Organizing guide, added our podcast to three new platforms (for a total of
five websites/apps where it can now be listened to), began an academic outreach program, and increased our
social media outreach and engagement. Our monthly Real Food Reads emails—which now include a special
section with articles and news from our previously featured authors who continue making waves—are opened
by roughly 1,600 readers per month.
