Area of Focus Number 5: Safety and Wellness
Goal:
Strengthen the physical safety, social awareness, and emotional wellness of all
Walnut Valley students, staff, and community members.
Objectives:
• Strengthen staff, student, and community members’ physical and emotional safety in our
schools and offices through the following means:
o Create/update Comprehensive School Safety Plans based on the input of multiple
stakeholders that comply with all state and legal guidelines
o Collaborate with various stakeholders to determine policies and procedures related to
safety cameras and visitors’ management systems
o Improve active threat procedures and protocols through the following means:
• Conduct ongoing, unannounced active threat drills on all campuses
• Continue aligning active threat protocols and terminology across all school sites
• Ensure all stakeholders’ needs are addressed (e.g., students with disabilities,
substitute teachers’ training, etc.)
• Solicit feedback from experts (e.g., Sheriff’s Department) on the effectiveness of
school site active threat preparations
o Identify and address facility-related safety needs (e.g., Walnut Elementary School
block wall)
o Implement and train staff to use the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) devices
o Continue assessing Districtwide safety needs through the Safety and Wellness Task
Force
• Strengthen school climate, and support students’ social and emotional wellness in the
following ways:
o Expand education on social and emotional learning to students, parents, and
community
o Continue proactive measures in curbing substance abuse issues, particularly vaping
