WVUSD: 2019/2020 Year-End Results At school sites, administration and staff continued organizing a variety of teams and meetings to ensure ongoing communication with various stakeholders. These included, but were not limited to, Principal’s Council, Student Advisory Groups, Coffee with the Principal, Disaster Response Coaching, Monitor Mondays, and Advocacy Push-Ins. Additionally, new groups across the District emerged this year to improve communication. One example was the convening of the Districtwide Career Technical Education (CTE) Advisory Committee, which provided a forum for business and industry partners, parents, and students to work collaboratively with administrators and CTE teachers in improving the college and career outcomes of students. Other emerging groups included the Walnut High School Community Club, Diamond Bar High School Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Council and Team Development, and Distance Learning Cohorts to support teachers transitioning to Distance Learning. Finally, District Office administration ensured engagement with its “circles of influence” by facilitating weekly meetings with Executive Cabinet and Cabinet, bi-monthly meetings with principals, monthly meetings with Leadership Team, periodic budget stabilization meetings, and the annual Leadership Team Retreat. During school closures, District and site administration held virtual meetings on a frequent basis so that time-sensitive or closures-related issues and concerns were addressed in a timely fashion. Communication through virtual meetings, with both WVEA and CSEA leadership teams, occurred on a regular basis so that all parties were proactively addressing issues related to school closures. Develop a Culture of Collaboration A distinguishing element of the Walnut Valley culture continues to be the high levels of collaboration that exist across the organization. This collaborative culture is witnessed from our Board of Trustees to classroom teachers, and between our respective negotiating teams. Quite simply, collaboration as an everyday practice has strengthened relationships between and amongst stakeholders representing the Walnut Valley family. This school year, the Personnel Commission welcomed back Mrs. Gayle Pacheco, an experienced practitioner in the Merit System, as the Classified Appointee to the Commission. She joined Mr. Ray McMullen, Joint Appointee, and Mr. Michael Cobarrubias, Board Appointee. This three-member Personnel Commission has worked collaboratively with the District’s director of classified personnel in delivering improved outcomes in the District classified employment practices and processes. As in the past, collaborative opportunities were designed between WVEA, CSEA, WVAA, and District administration and negotiation teams. John Gray, CEO of School Services of California, was again invited to provide an overview of the state and District budgets to these respective teams. As well, individuals from these teams were able to provide feedback on the progress of the District’s five focus areas. Collaboration between schools continues to grow ultimately benefiting all students. This is evidenced by Principal PLCs, Curriculum Councils, SEL Councils, and Counselors’ Network. 29
