Hopevale Memorial
Cathedral in the Glen
75 Years ~ 1943-2018
Hopevale Memorial Cathedral in the Glen was
created 75 years ago to honor 11 American
Baptist missionaries who were killed in the
Philippines in World War II on the island of
Panay. Tucked in the woods, it is a replica of a
chapel built by the missionaries. Poems written
by a fugitive of the Japanese troops in 1942-43
line the path to the chapel.
The original was reached by a well-hidden trail
down into a tropical mountain ravine. Visitors
to Green Lake’s Hopevale find it remarkably
similar to the original, as it is reached on a quiet
wooded path. Here, worshippers may come
freely; in the Philippines, they worshipped with
the stark reality of impending death.
The World Mission Conference will honor
Hopevale’s 75th anniversary at their conference
in July.
