42 % ( 1938 ) of all traffic stop searches resulted in the discovery of contraband . When considering the type of search , it is clear probable cause searches were the most likely to result in contraband hits .
Probable cause searches comprised 59 % ( 2722 ) of the total number of searches . 89.3 % ( 1728 ) of the contraband that was discovered in all searches came from those initiated by probable cause . Of the probable cause searches , contraband was found in 63.5 %.
Consent searches comprised 5.3 % ( 246 ) of the total number of searches . 2.4 % ( 47 ) of the contraband discovered in all searches came from those based on consent . Of the consent searches , 19.1 % resulted in the discovery of contraband .
