“When Morning Gilds
the Skies”
German, ca. 1800
Tr. by Edward Caswall, 1853, 1858
When morning gilds the skies,
My heart awaking cries:
May Jesus Christ be praised.
Alike at work and prayer
To Jesus I repair:
May Jesus Christ be praised.
When sleep her balm denies,
My silent spirit sighs:
May Jesus Christ be praised.
When evil thoughts molest,
With this I shield my breast:
May Jesus Christ be praised.
Does sadness fill my mind?
A solace here I find:
May Jesu s Christ be praised.
Or fades my earthly bliss?
My comfort still is this:
May Jesus Christ be praised.
In heav’n’s eternal bliss
The loveliest strain is this:
May Jesus Christ be praised.
The pow’rs of darkness fear,
When this sweet chant they hear:
May Jesus Christ be praised.
Let earth’s wide circle round
In joyful notes resound:
May Jesus Christ be praised.
Let air and sea and sky,
From depth to height, reply:
May Jesus Christ be praised.
“All Praise to Thee
My God This Night”
Thomas Ken, 1695, 1709
All praise to Thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light;
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Beneath Thine own almighty wings.
Forgive me, Lord, for Thy dear Son,
The ills that I this day have done;
That with the world, myself, and Thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.
O may my soul on Thee repose,
And with sweet sleep mine eyelids close;
Sleep that may me more vig’rous make
To serve my God when I awake.
When in the night I sleepless lie,
My soul with heav’nly thoughts supply;
Let no ill dreams disturb my rest,
No pow’rs of darkness me molest.
O when shall I in endless day
Forever chase dark sleep away.
And hymns with the supernal choir
Incessant sing, and never tire!
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
TUNE: TALLIS’ CANON L.M.
Thomas Tallis, ca. 1567
(#401)
Be this, while life is mine,
My canticle divine:
May Jesus Christ be praised.
Be this th’eternal son,
Through all the ages on:
May Jesus Christ be praised.
As Christ’s church, a necessary
part of our calling is the
ministry of mercy. Christ
demonstrates this through His
miracles which show us that the
ministry of the church is offered
through deeds of mercy as well
as by proclamation of His word.
As the Diaconate Merc y
C om m itt e e , w e s e e k t o
tangibly convey the Gospel by
extending mercy to members
and regular attendees who
may find themselves in an
unforeseen crisis or challenging
situation. Ministering to our
immediate church family is
our first priority…just as a
man must care for his own
household first (1 Timothy 5:8),
so your Diaconate will see to
our congregation’s needs first.
Because the Mercy Committee
is a ministry that focuses
entirely on the work of mercy,
we seek to know the mercy
needs of our congregation and
could use your assistance to
that end. While our Deacons
and Elders regularly seek out
opportunities to serve, sadly, on
occasion, opportunities either
go unnoticed or unknown.
To aid in this important
ministry, please know that we
are anxious to serve you, our
church family, and would greatly
appreciate your communicating
any of your own, or other
members’ needs that you may
be aware of. To do so, you can
reach out to your Care Group
Elder or Deacon, call the church
office or just fill out a fellowship
card and drop it in the offering
plate.
