I found Jay King’s article in the December 2017 issue of LakeTalk
(“Street Safety”) very interesting and informative. Th ere is
one thing I would like to add to the discussion. I grew up in a
“sidewalk-less” neighborhood. We were taught to always walk on
the side of the road (or dirt or asphalt shoulder) facing oncoming
traffi c (on the left side), so you would be more aware of traffi c on
the roadbed (and they of you). I have noticed since that time that
the vast majority of folks now walk on the roads with the traffi c
(in the same direction). Th is is also true on the sidewalk-less
roads in the Lake Linganore community. Th e recommendation
of the National Highway Traffi c Safety Administration (NHTSA)
is to walk facing/against traffi c. I suggest that pedestrians in Lake
Linganore follow this guideline (walk facing/against oncoming
traffi c) for a safer traverse of our roadways. On the other hand,
the rule for cyclists is that they ride with the traffi c (on the right
or same side).
