Conservation Matters In 2018, the Conservancy once again offered our free monthly educational series, Conservation Matters. Presentation topics included Sea Island cotton, owls, snakes, sea turtles, bird, and alligator research, and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary conservation program. In the spring we enjoyed a kayak tour with naturalists from the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. One of our most popular presentation topics, Restoring Nature’s Relationships at Home featuring Doug Tallamy, was presented to a packed house and highlighted the Town of Kiawah Island’s new Grow Native initiative. Guests at this presentation received native plants of their choice from the Town of Kiawah Island. We extend our special thanks to the Town of Kiawah Island, the Kiawah Island Community Association, and the Kiawah Island Golf Resort for sponsoring our Conservation Matters programs. Children’s Activities In the summer of 2018, the Conservancy held a free series of children’s activities featuring shorebirds, diamondback terrapins, marine mammals, and more. These educational and interactive programs kicked off with a visit from the South Carolina Aquarium Rover and their touch tanks full of outreach creatures. Local diamondback terrapin enthusiast Marilyn Blizard shared information about this special species and Kiawah Island Shorebird Stewardship (KISS) team member, Beverly Gholson, spoke to the families at the shorebird program. These programs were co-sponsored by the Town of Kiawah Island and the Kiawah Island Community Association. Kiawah Conservancy 2018 Annual Report 11
