Surf Team Trip
Taranaki, a large peninsula set into the West Coast of the
North Island. A place renowned for wet weather, freezing
temperatures, huge mountains… and some of the best surf
in the country.
In term two another trip was organised, with the Patea crew
expected to come over and enjoy the golden beaches and
grand weather of sunny Hawke’s Bay. Unfortunately they
were unable to make it across to the East Coast, resulting in
a local trip for just our surf team. While the surf and weather
were not brilliant, we still managed to score some reasonable
waves out at Waimarama and Ocean Beach where we had
the privilege to use the facilities at the Ocean Beach Club
House. It was also good preparation for the Hawke’s Bay
Secondary Schools’ competition set for the day after, where
many young surfers around the region came to compete. All
in all, our school had a very successful day.
Senior winners: 1st Eli Shaw-Throp, 2nd Wiremu Shaw-
Throp, 3rd Jesse Mildren
Junior winners: 1st Cameron Broad, 2nd Max de Groot, 3rd
Luca Rendle, 4th Tobias Murfitt
In term one, the Havelock North High School surf team set
out to enjoy the wide range of waves Taranaki had to offer.
The team comprised of Cameron Broad, Rupert Brown,
Tyler Clarke-Moran, James de Groot, Max de Groot, Jesse
Mildren (captain), Tobias Murfitt, Ben Peterson, Luca
Rendle, and Wiremu Shaw-Throp.
It was a new experience for many of the members which
meant no lack of excitement. This two night trip was hosted
by Patea Area School and the principal Nicola Ngarewa,
who showed fantastic manaakitanga to our company. After
being greeted by a powhiri, we learned about the protests
over the proposed deep sea mining nearby. It was a harsh
realisation that many of the surf breaks in the region were at
great risk and made surfing these breaks even more special.
We roamed the peninsula and scored some awesome surf at
Fitzroy Beach in New Plymouth, further south at Arawhata,
and off a point overlooked by an old pa site near Opunake.
Some of the heavier breaks provided a challenging yet fun
experience for the boys. Many were forced out of their
comfort zones, yet some amazing, uncrowded surf made for
a trip we would all never forget. Overall the boys were all
fantastic ambassadors, respectful and very tired at the end
of the trip.
Many thanks to the parents who supervised these trips:
Messrs, Simon & Daniel Murfitt, Garry Broad, Michael
Brown and Michael de Groot.
Also, a huge thank you to the Hustle Surf shop in Hastings
and to Backdoor in Havelock North for their sponsorship; it
was a grand time and we all hope there will be many more
to come.
