Senior A Boys’ Basketball
With the end of the second term came the Havelock North
Invitational, held in the first weekend of the July holidays at
Pettigrew Green Arena. The teams that showed up to play
in this tournament were: Campion College from Gisborne,
Wairoa College, Swish Club from Napier and Taradale
College. On Saturday, we played and beat Campion College
(66 - 36), Taradale College (60 - 57) and Swish (55 - 54). On
Sunday, we played and beat Wairoa College (56 - 44). Going
through pool play undefeated meant we went into the final
against Taradale feeling pretty confident. This game was very
intense, with both our teams keeping it even throughout the
whole game. During the game, our centre Tommy Fergusson
went down with a rolled ankle. After some treatment, he
returned to the game to continue to contribute the way he
had done all tournament. The game came down to the final

This year, basketball for the Havelock North High School
Senior A Boys’ team has been a tough ride. We started the
season off strong, winning two of the three seeding games,
which placed us in the division one premier grade with the
best schools in Hawke’s Bay. From there on, we found the
competition very tough, losing the remaining games of the
season. So we focused on working towards our tournaments
coming up in the year. During the third term, we played
our last game against Napier Boys A. We did better than
we thought we would, which was good because it showed
the improvements we had made throughout the year.
Unfortunately we lost Keizer Lowe in the first quarter due
to an ankle injury, which was severe enough to keep him
out of the remainder of the season. Although the Hawke’s
Bay competition was difficult, it meant we had to improve
a lot, and in a short amount of time, to be able to try to
compete. Instead of dwelling on repeated losses, we stayed
positive and focussed on getting ourselves ready for the two
tournaments we competed in this year.
